The inception of the Indian movie songs can be traced back to the advent of India's first talking and moving picture, which was made in the year of 1931. This first Indian Movie was entitled "Alam Ara".
This first Indian movie was responsible for ushering in a completely new era in Indian motion pictures. Also at the very same time this movie was responsible for sowing the seeds of a whole new genre of Indian Movie songs.
In the 30's three major film centres for the Indian movies were developed. These film centers were based in Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras. Of all these three centres, Bombay came to be known for the production of movies that were geared for national distribution.
On the other hand Madras and Calcutta were known for movies, which appealed to a more regional audience. The initial few years of the Indian Movie industry were very fruitful. As a direct result, the Indian Movies songs also did well at this point of time.
In the period between the years of 1931 and 1940 India produced 931 Hindi movies. Each of these movies featured an average of 10 Indian movie songs per film.
The number of the regional films that were produced in Madras and Calcutta were far fewer in comparison, but they also had an average of 10 Indian movie songs featured in them.
The Indian Movie industry saw a change and a shift in the existing trends in the years of the 1940's and 1950's. The trends began to shift away from the big motion picture studios to the independent producers.
This of course opened up many doors to many new musicians and music directors in the Indian Movie songs industry. But the overall influence of the independent producers in the industry was not a positive one.
